1. What's new?
---------------
Version 1.0 was released in January, 1992.
This is the first callsign database for and by radio amateurs ever
to be compiled within the former USSR territory.
Version 1.1 was released on June 17, 1992.
Here's a brief listing of additions and changes made to the R&R interface.
1. Hercules screen support.
2. Approved translation of the address in English, for convenience
of Russian post offices and the mail services of the other
republics.
3. New screen for customizing labels, with a choise of standard
formats of labels, envelopes and printer from the list.
Added to this version is a new and useful feature developed by Octavia.
At long last there will be no disquieting "NO INFORMATION ABOUT"
to pop up when the program fails to locate the callsign.
Now the built-in filter program establishes whether it was a callsign
that was entered in, a special-event call, or a World War 2 veteran's call,
and reports on the cause of the failure to locate the callsign.
You will like this new feature of the program. It will even help you
to determine the prefix of any country should you, for instance,
be unsure of the allocation of the International Callsign Series,
especially when you come across a special-event prefix.
1.1. Distribution :
------------------
The R&R distribution diskettes can be freely copied and shared.
The program is shareware, so you can try it free of charge. You can try
the software to make sure it is compatible with your hardware and that it
fits your needs before you buy it by registering it.
You have the luxury of trying out the complete programs at your own pace
and in the comfort of your own home.
We ask you to help us distribute R&R by sharing unmodified copies of the
diskettes.
Your support is important and greatly appreciated.
The latest version of the R&R program and data is available from j-Com
on diskette for $5.95 (including shipping and handling). Please
specify 3.5" 1.44 Meg or 5.25" 1.2 Meg format. Or it can be
downloaded from the Mountain Retreat BBS (408) 335-4595 where it is
called R&RCALLS.EXE. Telephone BBS sysops are encouraged to FREQ the
file R&RCALLS.EXE from this BBS and make it available to your local
users.

GETTING STARTED
1. System Requirements :
-----------------------
R&R is designed to run on an IBM PC/XT/AT, or a true IBM compatible running
MS-DOS or PC-DOS (version 3.0 or later). R&R requires at least 384K of RAM
to run.
To check the amount of memory available, use your operating system's CHKDSK
command.
You can use R&R with either of the IBM PC displays, a monochrome display
or a color graphics display. If you have a high resolution color monitor,
you can use R&R in color.
R&R detects whether a color card is present. If a color card is detected,
R&R will use its color mode.
STARTING R&R
R&R may be run by simply changing to the \R&R directory and typing at the
system prompt :
R&R
followed by a carriage return.
R&R starts and displays "LOOK FOR..." command window.
1. Searching For Call :
----------------------
In the "call" field, type the callsign you want to search for.
The search callsign can be up to 6 characters long. RA0AAA is the longest
type of callsign that may be used.
You can enter the callsign in any combinations of uppercase and lowercase
characters, regardless of capitalization.
For example, if you type
"ra0aa" or "ra0AA"
as the search callsign, R&R searches for "RA0AA".
Press ENTER to start the search.
When you choose the search command again, the callsign you last searched
for will appear in the "call" field of "LOOK FOR..." command window.
On receiving a message
QSL via <call>, NOW <call>, c/o <call>,
you need not type the addressee's callsign again, just press space bar key
and this callsign appears in the "call" field of the "LOOK FOR..." command
window.
By pressing ENTER, R&R is searching for the displayed callsign.
1.1. If R&R Cannot Find the Callsign :
-------------------------------------
Make sure that you spelled the search callsign correctly.
1. If you attempt to key in a non-callsign the program will show
on the screen
" CANNOT BE A CALLSIGN ".
2. The program is capable of recognizing a non-C.I.S. call.
You can use this helpful function if you want to find a country's
prefix in the International Callsign Series.
In such a case you get the reading :
" NON-C.I.S. CALLSIGN.
PREFIX OF <country> ON THE LIST OF
INTERNATIONAL CALLSIGN SERIES "
3. Earlier R&R versions could not identify the special-event calls.
Version 1.2 identifies the special-event call and reports :
" A SPECIAL-EVENT STATION "
QSL routes of such stations operating in the territory of the former
USSR and C.I.S. will be added when they become available.
4. Former prefixes of some republics can be recognize by the program.
If R&R fails to locate the entered call the program will report :
" THE FORMER PREFIX OF <country>.
DELETED FROM THE LIST. "
5. Certain calls may be hard to identify as to which group they
belong to because they are for a special event or license.
Sometimes a license may be issued from the block of special series.
Occasionally situations occur when a callsign is too difficult
to identify definitely with one of these groups.
Another aggravation is that some newly independent republics are now
drawing on the USSR special-event block to issue their new ordinary
licences.
Therefore, until we have access to QSL information on calls of this
group, you will have to do with the report :
" MAY BE IDENTIFIED AS A SPECIAL-EVENT CALL
OR A NEW LICENSE "
6. A similar callsign group hard to identify definitely as pertaining
to special-event or WW 2 veterans is one whose calls have one U
in the prefix. When these crop up you get R&R report :
" MAY BE IDENTIFIED AS A SPECIAL-EVENT
OR A WORLD WAR 2 VETERAN'S CALL "
7. Not uncommon are cases of a user searching for a callsign erroneously
spelled in the "LOOK FOR..." command window or putting one on the air
misspelled or missreceived.
So please check the callsign for mistakes if you get :
" CALLSIGN DOESN'T EXIST. "
8. Changes are apt to come, so do not be upset with the program ending
its dialogue with you with report :
" A NEW LICENSE, OR IS NOT IN THE CALLBOOK "
Look for the latest version of R&R on your local BBS.
1.2. Printing the Address :
--------------------------
R&R can easily print the addresses.
When you press ENTER, R&R begins printing the displayed address in the
"Info" window.
You cannot edit the address. Information can be viewed but not changed.
On the screen the order of the displayed address will be :
1. CALL
2. NAME
3. ADDRESS
4. REPUBLIC
On the paper you will see a different order :
1. CALL NAME
2. ADDRESS
3. REPUBLIC
For example, if you've typed RA0AA as the search callsign, you will get
the following result :
RA0AA ALEXANDER I. SMAKHTIN
662100, ACHINSK, P.O. BOX 55
RUSSIA
This structure of the postal addresses is convenient for Russian and
republican postal services.
NOTE: many amateurs in the former USSR use a QSL address different from
their official mailing address.
When the text line reaches the "Info" window right margin, R&R
automatically moves the address end to the next line.
Near letter quality (NLQ) print is the default mode.
R&R uses a special character set very similar to that of a typewriter.
Using NLQ mode for the mailing labels gives them a polished look.
NLQ is slower than the standard print (draft mode).
You can use the control panel of your printer for NLQ type style
options (if included).
If your printer does not carry the NLQ print, the text will be printed in
emphasized print (dark printing). In emphasized print, the characters get
double-printed in one pass.
1.3. Erasing Callsign :
----------------------
When you press ENTER, R&R will print the entire address.
For convenience, R&R allows you to erase the contents of the "call" field
and print just a part of the address, except the callsign.
This is helpful, for example, if you do not want to place the callsign on
an envelope.
You can delete callsign from the "call" field by pressing F10 :
ALEXANDER I. SMAKHTIN
662100, ACHINSK, P.O. BOX 55
RUSSIA
If you press F10 again, the callsign reappears :
RA0AA ALEXANDER I. SMAKHTIN
662100, ACHINSK, P.O. BOX 55
RUSSIA
1.4. Changing Printer :
----------------------
The default printer model is EPSON. You can change printer by selecting
a different model.
To change printer :
1. Press F3 key to display a list of supported models. Printers are listed
alphabetically by the manufacturer's name and model.
2. Select the required model in the "model" field.
3. Press ENTER.
4. Press ESCAPE to cancel.
The direction keys, Home and End quickly scroll through the printers.
Name of your printer model appears in "CURRENT PRINTER:" line on the
"LAYOUT VIEW" screen.
You may also change printers from the "LAYOUT VIEW" screen with the F2
function key.
Your printer may not be included in the list of supported printers.
That does't mean the printer isn't supported. Many printers emulate
industry-standard printers such as the EPSON FX series. Read your printer
manual to see if your printer supports an emulation.
Below is a list of the supported printers :
Epson LX-80/86
Epson LX-400/800
Epson FX-80/85/100/800/850/1000/1050

1.5. Inserting Printer :
-----------------------
This section describes how to add a new printer.
If your printer is not listed, R&R allows you to insert it into
the list of available printer names by pressing INSERT.
The highlight moves automatically to where you want to insert the printer.
1. Press INSERT to add a new printer to the list.
The "CUSTOMIZED PRINTER" screen will appear.
1.6. Customizing Your Printer :
------------------------------
You can now set up your printer.
Describing the printer's code command is the main step in the installation
process. Read your printer manual to find out how you can do this.
It will give you information on the different commands and control codes
your printer uses.
There will be some things you have to do yourself.
Entering control codes :
This section describes these actions in detail.
The most useful thing you can do is to define a way to enter the escape
code <ESC>, which is the control character with decimal character code 27
(hexadecimal 1B). Many printer commands begin with an escape character.
This code usually cannot be keyed in directly (pressing the ESCAPE key will
not work). As an installation option, however, you may be able to assign it
to a function key or a special key combination.
To enter the <ESC> code in R&R, type "\" and then 27 on the numeric
keypad. <ESC> will not appear on the screen, but the symbol will be
displayed.
The "\" is the same as if the ALT key was pressed.
NOTE : Most printer commands consist of the escape code followed by one
or more letters or numbers. Some examples :
<ESC> P Pica pitch
<ESC> M Elite pitch
<ESC> 4 Italic
<ESC> "x" "1" NLQ
Many commands have parameters that can be specified as either character
codes or digit characters, like in the sample command above.
Upper and lower case letters may have different effects.
For example, to enter parameters
<ESC> "x" <1> (NLQ in Standard and IBM modes),
type
"\27x\1" combination.
The "x" must be the lower case.
You will see the following result on the screen :
"x"
Sometimes one code turns on an effect and another turns it off, such as
<ESC> E
to turn on emphasized text and
<ESC> F
to turn it off.
To enter control codes below ASCII 32, type "\" and then the decimal number
of the control code.
1. Type your printer model in the "printer model" field.
2. Enter the control codes.
Use direction keys or the TAB key to move to the field you want to enter
codes in.
"printer initialization" ─ reinitializes (resets) the printer.
Clears the print buffer and returns
settings to their power-up values.
"line spacing to n/72 inch" ─ sets line spacing to n/72 inch.
"line spacing to n/216 inch" ─ sets line spacing to n/216 inch.
"line spacing to n/60 inch" ─ sets line spacing to n/60 inch.
(for 24-pin dot matrix printers)
"line spacing to n/180 inch" ─ sets line spacing to n/180 inch.
(for 24-pin dot matrix printers)
"normal pica pitch (10 cpi) ─ sets the basic pitch to normal pica
(10 characters per inch).
"normal elite pitch (12 cpi) ─ sets the basic pitch to normal elite
(12 characters per inch).
"emphasized printing" ─ sets emphasized print.
"cancel emphasized printing" ─ cancels emphasized print.
"NLQ mode" ─ sets "near letter quality mode."
"cancel NLQ mode" ─ cancels "near letter quality mode."
"left margin" ─ sets the left margin. The left margin
must always be set at column 0.
To increase the left margin, simply
change the default setting in the
"margin" field of your label.
(See "Customizing The Label" section).

R&R displays a message asking you whether or not you want to save your
edits.
1. Select YES or press Y to save the changes.
2. Select NO or press N to discard the changes.
1.8. Deleting Printer :
----------------------
You can also delete the printer permanently from the list.
CAUTION! This command can have a drastic effect if you use it accidently.
R&R prompts you first to make sure you really want to delete the printer.
1. Select the printer you want to delete.
2. Press DELETE to delete the printer.
R&R will ask you to confirm the deletions.

as well as left and top indents for the text area.
All formats are displayed on the screen.
If you do not like any size on the list of labels and envelopes of
